TRABUCO CANYON, CA. APRIL 1, 2000 -- "Last year, someone got "stuck" with cactus needles, someone else got cut on a piece of scrap metal, then a volunteer suffered a diabetic seizure and several people found hazardous materials that had been dumped.  These, and other situations that called for communications coordination over a 5-mile area kept us busy."  [Source:  Crest Communicationsivities, Team Newsletter]
Volunteer members of Crest Communications / Crest Communications [Corona, CA] will be providing more than just communications at this year's second annual clean-up.  In fact, they'll be doing more than simply pressing their 2-way radio microphones.  Members will arriving fully prepared to assist with off-road observation vehicles, mobile command centers and a full communications trailer.
"This year we will also dispatch a skip loader over the area, and patrol the main road with several signed vehicles to stay in touch by radio with the event organizers." according to Bob Leef, also known as Crest Communications - Unit 1.  "As always, we are soliciting the assistance from other local Communications teams ... the more the better."
Crest Communications is also known as Team #4252, chartered by Communications International [Suitland, MD].  Since 1978, they have been providing professional communications at various events throughout southern California.  They are also a participant in the Repeater Users Group [RUG], an organization promoting legal operation of 2-way radio communications and providing training on the proper use of their repeater network.

Last March [1999], more than 400 volunteers came together to rid the Arroyo trabuco of more than 100 tons of illegally dumped materials, dilapidated car bodies, car batteries, paint cans, old washing machines and dryers and various construction and toxic materials.  Arroyo Trabuco's wilderness was considered by many to be a free landfill.  This year with increased public awareness and anti-dumping signs displayed within the canyon there is significantly less trash that needs removal.  Because of this improvement, it will allow the volunteers time to focus on other canyon restoration projects.
Saturday, April 1st, they hope to have an equally large turnout as last year to help clean and restore the open space of the arroyo.  This year's clean-up will focus on the removal of graffiti, trash and invasive plants.  Another project will be the blocking off of the illegal off-road trails to prevent 4x4 usage which ultimately leads to the erosion and loss of sensitive habitat.  In turn they will be replanting areas damaged by such off-roading vehicles.
This clean-up will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will meet at the mouth of the arroyo, before the bridge at Trabuco Creek, off Trabuco Road.  This event is being sponsored by Trails 4 All and Campfire Boys and Girls Club of Orange County.  Free T-shirts are being provided by Patagonia for the first 100 volunteers.  Come when you can and bring gloves, trash bags, family and friends and your love and respect for the natural wildernss.  The day will end with a complimentary barbecue for all the volunteers from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Holy Jim Fire Bar.
