CREST believes training plays both a critical and essential role in our
"on air" operations and is fundamental aspect of our
organizational operations. Training begins when an application for
membership is approved and before radio operations begin.
Repeater Users Group (RUG)
CREST is a participating and contributing member to the Repeater Users
Group (better known simply as "RUG"), an organization
headquartered in southern California
devoted to the smooth, coordinated operations of all repeaters using GMRS
(General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies.
CREST uses the training manual originally authored by RUG and adapted for
our CREST radio operations.
Training is Ongoing
CREST believes that standardization in training ultimately leads to
increased professionalism. Our "on air" operations are
evaluated by other radio operators and the general public each time a
message is transmitted by one of our members. A good message reflects
positively on us, both as as individual radio operators and an
organization.
Our ongoing success, both in recruiting new members and maintaining a
professional image is based, we believe, on the importance we place on
training.
Each new applicant must undergo "radio basics" training before
their name can be submitted for authorization. After successfully
completing their initial training, a form is completed by an authorized
training official within our organization and submitted to the Repeater
Users Group.
Radio Authorization Required
One that form has been received, a representative from RUG will schedule
their name to be announced on the next radio net. RUG conducts a
radio net each Monday at 2000 Hours (or 8:00 pm) on RUG Channel One
(462.675).
Public announcement is done for two reasons:
- All new members are
introduced to all existing users in the area, and
- Existing users can assist
monitoring new members and provide feedback regarding "on
air" operations.
FREE TRAINING FOR
NEW MEMBERS
The emphasis on training is considered so important that all new members
receive FREE TRAINING after our team has received and processed a
membership application.
Initial orientation is then reinforced through individual participation,
team practice sessions and involvement in our activities and
operations.
Training is also considered crucial to maintaining the image we have as
professional communicators. Each time we "key our
microphone" is an opportunity to provide new or prospective radio
operators with an example of "how to do it right" when using
their radio.
Currently, the following training opportunities are available to all CREST
members:
